Types of LCD Explained Part-2.2 ( IPS, Retina Display)

TFT's improved LCD's in many ways like increased viewing angles and increasing the fps  making it more suitable for gaming but even the new improved LCD (TFT) had it's flaws, Read all about TFT's in previous part of the Get To Know- link is
here - http://shekhar087tech.blogspot.com/2014/07/get-to-know-displays-part-21-types-of.html
and to remove all that IPS displays were developed in the 1996 by Hitachi.Inc
IPS is also and LCD display it uses polarizers and liquid crystals and everything else but it a different way than TFT's and LCDs. so let's see how IPS display work?

IPS (In-Plane Switching)

The polarizers in IPS are not at a 90 degree angle to each other but are in the plane, So with liquid crystals inside the light coming from the back of the display gets through the first polarizer gets twisted by the liquid crystals and then blocked by second polarizer.
To let the light pass through current is supplied to the liquid crystals to untwist them.
It's pretty easy to get confused in the working of TFT and IPS displays but the simplest i can put them is lke this.

IPS Displays - work on the principle of blocking the light and let some of it pass when required.
TFT Displays - work on the principle of letting the light pass and blocking some of it when required.

And some other differences too, IPS displays unlike TFT's have transistor arranged on the same plane but, because of that most of the light coming from the back gets blocked, creating a very dim image  so a brighter backlight was placed at the back.

Retina Display
Retina Display is basically IPS display with the number of pixels so high the human eye cannot see any any individual pixel.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros
  1. Accurate color, better viewing angles, higher fps
  2. Do not show tailing when touch making it ideal for touch screen devices.
  3. can handle better graphics and decreased respnse time
  • Cons
  1. Requires more power than TFT's because of brighter backlight, 15% more power consumption
  2. More Expensive than TFT's
This is it, in the next part i'll be talking about LEDs and OLEDs so remember to come back tomorrow.
