One of the biggest announcements of CES this year was not a device but a chip..The Nvidia Tegra K1, a huge step up in mobile graphics, the Tegra K1 with the desktop class Kepler GPU with 192 CUDA(Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores.
The K1 will come in two stages....
- A quad-core Cortex A-15 is set on arriving the first half of the year.
- A dual-core custom Nvidia 64-bit Denver core setup should get to us in the second half..
Nvidia had a 7 inch tablet at CES running the Tegra K1, looked like the current Nexus7 ..
First up with this was a rather amusing gentleman, rendered at near-photo realistic level of detail and surface effects, you can zoom right in and see the hair on his chin.. and was showing almost real expressions really great work Nvidia .. But of-course the Tegra K1 was using majority of it's power to render one head so you won't be able to that kind of detail in whole game world but it is still awesome...
Nvidia Tegra K1 Tablet Specs
The Nvidia Tegra K1 reference tablet is a 7-incher that looks a lot like the Tegra Note 7 reference design that Nvidia demonstrated earlier in 2013. It's indeed based on the Note 7 chassis outside, but under the hood it's improved the reference design tablet is a hint for device manufacturers about which way they can go when making there devices but it does not dedicate design choices ,so the actual devices may be and most probably will look different...
in terms of specs , specs can be easily copied by other device makers that choose to use the K1 chip, it has a 7 inch 1920x1200 resolution display and 4GB of RAM ..so this is real beast of a tablet .. that Geeks like me would love to have..

Kepler Graphics
The Tegra K1 tablet will feature a Quad-core Cortex A15 chip. We have also already seen a quad-core A-15 on devices like the Nexus10, and we also know the peaks and limits of ARM's cores, so it's not really CPU that we are looking forward to with the first wave of K1 tablets. Instead it's all about the Kepler graphics..
the Kepler GPU uses a desktop class Nvidia design with a huge number of cores 192CUDA cores allowing quick rendering oh highly parallel instructions. Let me once again say that it would not be correct to call the K1 a "192-core chip" since these are small GPU cores and not CPU cores. Still, it's a hugely impressive design for graphics. Nvidia showed a slide saying Kepler in the K1 is actually the point where it's road map
for desktop and mobile converges, hence it's completely justified to speak about speak about this as a desktop class GPU.

Another slide of Nvidia showed puts this performance in in context. Tegra K1 out performs SONY Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox360..at 20 times lower power budget - 5 watts for the K1 against the nearly 100 watts for the consoles. At the 5Watt K1 managed to score 365 peak GFLOPS,nearly double the PS3 scores..
We saw in the CES 2014 that K1 chip can manage to display almost realistic human expressions no other company in the world can do that i don't know how Nvidia manged to do that but i am glad that they did..
That's all leave your thoughts in the comments section down below ..and be sure to share it if you like it..
Peace..
